Review: Ready Player One
'Ready Player One' is Spielberg's most recent flick and he has proven once again that he is one of the greatest film makers of all time!
Based on the book of the same name, Wade (Sheridan) is on the hunt for the three keys needed to claim the OASIS.
Going into the movie I was nervous that it would turn out to be "look at all this cool stuff that you might remember!" However, it was so much more. Things like the DeLorean and the Iron Giant served a much higher purpose in the movie, which made them much more meaningful.
The film also explored an interesting look at the antagonist corporation. Led by Ben Mendelsohn's Sorrento, they looked to find the Easter Egg in the OASIS to take control and force players to pay the company to play, ruining the ideas that the system was built on (sounds familiar doesn't it?).
The downfalls of this movie came with a couple things in which I just didn't feel invested. For instance, Wade's aunt was a character that just did nothing for me. She lacked much real development which made it difficult to fully understand her relationship with Wade.
My only other real complaint came with the romance in the film. It just felt out of place and forced. It came somewhat randomly felt generally forced into the plot.
With that being said, the good heavily outweighs the bad. I truly loved this movie! Steven Spielberg is obviously one of the best in the business and his ability to put such wonderful stories as this on screen continues to solidify his place at the top. I felt incredibly immersed in the action and completely on board as Wade advanced toward his goal.
Overall, this is one of my favorites of the year (so far)! With an engaging story and fun for all audiences, 'Ready Player One' is well worth seeing in theaters as soon as possible.
