Review: Booksmart

This is movie is basically the cross between 'Superbad' and any movie with more heart than 'Superbad'.

'Booksmart' follows best friends that spent their four years of high school getting all the grades but not having enough fun. The night before graduation, they decide to make up for all the partying that they missed.

Obviously, I had to make the overused joke about comparing this movie to 'Superbad', but seriously. It is basically 'Superbad' with girls and a good story. However, that story is what elevates this film to a much higher level than just a high school comedy. This movie has serious heart. The friendship between Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) and Molly (Beanie Feldstein) is absolutely charming and more importantly, realistic. The problems that these characters face (for the most part) feel like they probably happen every day. This kept the story grounded and made it easy to care about the characters.

Along with the great plot, this movie was hilarious. Many of the jokes made me laugh out loud and they kept me consistently entertained. Even the many other supporting characters managed to set up great ongoing jokes.

To be completely honest, I don't have much more to say about this one. Simply put, it was a great movie and a highlight of the year so far. If you have not yet, make sure you catch this one! it is absolutely worth the watch and I cannot wait for more from these actresses and the next project for Olivia Wilde.

Overall, I give 'Booksmart' an 8.4/10
